Desi is a Sanskrit word come to signify a musical movement in the diasporas of Southeast Asia, alive with the improvisational sharing of form, melodies and traditions of the world's youth cultures.

Interweaving a rugged upbringing in the western United States Landscape with formal studies on the Eastern Seaboard and Europe, it's always been about mixing traditions and influences for Gary Coles-Christensen. Drawing together the varied influences of East and West is what he does.

However, to get at the rudimentary pattern language it was necessary to understand the original designers in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Here at Desi now we are concerned with wool, silk, nettles, and hemp. These are the humble fibers of the weavers' art.

The American Southwest has always been a sort of epicenter of the visual arts. Independents, artists and thinkers have historically sought out inspiration here in their pursuit of an authentic, personal vision. Simplicity, color and pure form are valued here.
